All answersBulin47Viral📌 Short answer
Dembow is two things: a drum loop and a genre. The loop comes from Jamaican dancehall, named after Shabba Ranks' 1990 song "Dem Bow", and it became the backbone of reggaeton. The genre is the Dominican Republic's faster, rawer street music built on it, which Bulin 47 has sung for a decade. Kevin Wai's own caption on the Madrid freestyle says it: he is "cantando dembow" with Bulin 47.

The loop and the genre
Berklee traces the loop to the Jamaican duo Steely and Clevie, first on Gregory Peck's "Poco Man Jam" (1989), then Shabba Ranks' "Dem Bow" (1990), which gave it the name. Spanish-language versions in Panama and Puerto Rico carried it into reggaeton. Berklee calls Dominican dembow "a harder, faster derivative" of Puerto Rican reggaeton (source).
| Dembow the loop | Dembow the genre | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | A short, lopsided kick and snare pattern | A Dominican style of urban music |
| Where from | Jamaica, around 1989 to 1990 | Dominican Republic |
| Where you hear it | Under most reggaeton | Bulin 47, El Alfa and the Dominican scene |
| Feel | Steady, swaying | Faster, harder, shouted hooks |
Is dembow Dominican or Jamaican?
Both, at different stages. The name and the original rhythm are Jamaican. The genre people mean today when they say "dembow" grew up in the Dominican Republic, and it is sung in Dominican Spanish.
What does "dembow" mean?
It is not a Spanish word. It comes from the title of the 1990 Jamaican song, written in patois. Berklee notes that song's lyrics are homophobic and calls it "an unfortunate namesake" (source). In Spanish "dembow" now just names the music.
Dembow vs reggaeton
- Same family: reggaeton grew out of the same Jamaican loop.
- Dominican dembow is harder and faster, in Berklee's words, with chanted hooks.
- Dembow lyrics lean on Dominican street slang, which is why lines like "no ando en paquete ni en falacia" need translating even for other Spanish speakers.
Why it gets banned sometimes
Dembow's explicit lyrics have put it in trouble at home. In June 2018 the Dominican regulator for public shows and broadcasting put an indefinite ban on eight urbano songs, including tracks by El Alfa and Bad Bunny, citing "vulgar content" (Remezcla). The regulator's bans cover radio, TV and public venues.
Where Bulin 47 fits
He is a dembow artist from the comedy side of the scene, with hits like "Bajo Mundo" and "Calorazo" (his songs, by views). After the Madrid clip he told Listín Diario that dembow "is immortal". "Dame Hombro", the song that grew out of the freestyle, comes from the same scene.
